CARC Webinars for Harvard Extension

For the past three years, each semester I have presented a webinar in collaboration with Harvard Extension’s Career and Academic Resource Center (CARC). CARC serves all registered Harvard Extension School students, and as described on their website (https://carc.extension.harvard.edu) they exist to “help students advance their learning in the classroom and … to be better positioned in their careers during and after their time at Harvard Extension School.” In addition to running a faculty aide program and advising, CARC also provides a variety of webinars throughout the semester.

The Academic Webinars include an impressive variety of categories, including the following: Academic skills building, citing and referencing, financial aids and student loans, graduate school application, study skills and resources, positive psychology-based academic coaching, presenting, public speaking and communication, and thesis and capstone process. There are also Career Webinars, which include the following categories: Career path spotlights, employer information sessions, exploring careers, and nuts and bolts.

The webinars I provided in the past usually rotated between a broad overview of library resources and services, and a more in-depth look at HOLLIS. I’ve also used the webinar for timely updates, including a preview of the new HOLLIS when it was still in beta/preview mode. For the Fall 2018 webinar I led in September, I focused on a broad overview of Harvard Library resources and services, but with a focus on the recent changes, as this webinar was designed to help expand on the DCE and Harvard Library integration and the increased access to resources and services. Probably not a surprise, given the increased interest in the changes to library access, this was one of the most popular webinars I led, with the attendance reaching the 100-participant maximum.
